Saturday, October 4th, 2009, I received a call from Sabra Johnson. She told me that Fred Daffner had suffered from a massive heart attack and had passed away. I was driving to a game at the time and my first reaction was disbelief, followed closely by shock. Now that I’ve read the article in the Troy Daily News, it is somehow real – it must be true, it’s there in black and white.
It’s a terrible loss and leaves me incredibly sad and empty. Fred was a genuinely good person. While I’ve seen him disappointed and angry, I can say the great balance of my time with him he has been a positive and caring person. He was a great resource for Becky while she served as Festival Chairman and I know that I’m disadvantaged with his passing.
I’m not certain at this point how we within the the festival will honor him – but I’m sure there will be no shortage of people who will want to participate. There is no good way to go. There is no good time to go. Having a community of people who will greatly mourn your passing as greatly as Fred’s is to be respected. He is going to be missed.
